Must-watch films about veganism and the meat industry

Cool movies/docs for a night on the couch

The TV is increasingly being replaced by YouTube and Netflix. Because we want to determine for ourselves what we watch and when we watch it. Long live the millennials? And we are also becoming more and more aware. We want to know where our food comes from, what it does to our body, but also the impact it has on our environment. And where do we come from, what is the meaning of life, how does it all actually work? Long live the internet where we can really look up everything we find interesting! But what do we want to watch? Well, we know some fun movies! We are often asked if we have any interesting movie tips. Yes indeed, we do! A lot even! Not that we never watch silly romantic comedies or series on Netflix (guilty), but we are just as happy to snack on popcorn with a good documentary. So we’ve put together a handy list.

A list of cool movies about sustainable living, the power of our thoughts, minimalism, and the fashion industry can be found here.

Best films that make you think differently about meat

Are you already aware of the benefits of plant-based eating but not entirely convinced of why or want more information on it? Or would you like to inspire your surroundings to put more plants on the menu? We have listed a number of films, documentaries, and videos that have inspired us. From animated films and documentaries to short videos and TED talks. Here we go:

Best Speech You Will Ever Hear – Gary Yourofsky (2010)

No fancy film, just a 70-minute lecture by Gary Yourofsky. One where we ourselves were captivated for the full 70 minutes and which places eating animal products in a very different perspective. It might challenge your belief system, but it’s definitely worth watching!

Carnism – TED Talk by Melanie Joy (2015)

Have you ever heard of carnism? We hadn’t. Melanie Joy, psychologist and sociologist, makes us aware of unconscious choices we make in our lives. Why do we eat pigs and find it not even pitiful, while we shudder at the thought of a dog on our plate? A TED talk of only 18 minutes so easy to watch in between.

The Change Starts (2019)

A Dutch film of only one minute! An inspiration that shows you that being strong, performing at top level and feeling your best go hand in hand with plant-based eating. No excuse, you want to make time for this minute.

Gamechangers (2018)

A revolutionary film about meat, proteins, and strength. Featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lewis Hamilton, among others. These top athletes show in an inspiring way that the way we thought about proteins and eating in the sports world is quite outdated. An eye-opener for everyone who still polishes off tubs of cottage cheese and chicken filets with rice after training.

But it’s vegan (2017)

Vegan and healthy are often mentioned in one breath, but is that the same? Burgers, fries, and cookies, as long as they contain no animal products it’s fine, right? A group of students take the test and discover the difference between a diet full of vegan processed foods and that of an unprocessed, plant-based diet. This one is for the vegan junk food fanatics among us!

Earthlings (2005)

Dare you to watch it? We cried at this film! Why do we want a perfectly filleted, marinated, and grilled piece of meat or fish but close our eyes to the way it got on our plate? With hidden cameras, it is shown what happens behind the walls of the meat industry. But it also shows how beautiful our world and the nature around us really is. This was one of the first films that made us look very differently at the food on our plate.

Forks over Knives (2011)

Can we really influence our health through what we eat? It almost seems like we have to accept that we will all get fatter, suffer from cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and need medication as we age. Can we change that by reducing animal products and processed foods? This documentary shows what, among others, scientists Dr. T. Campbell and Dr. C Esselstyn discover in their research.

Vegucated (2011)

Vegan, don’t be so silly! That’s not healthy at all and why would you even stop eating eggs? That was our first reaction when we heard about the existence of the word ‘vegan’. And it’s exactly the reaction of the three Americans in this film who not only discover that eating without meat and cheese can be delicious, but also suddenly become very aware of the other side of the meat industry.

Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret (2014)

A film (funded through crowdfunding) about the impact of our eating habits on the world, nature, and our climate. If you haven’t seen this film yet, turn on Netflix very quickly! Even if you do not eat 100% plant-based, this film shows what enormous impact it has if you eat one meal fully plant-based even just once.

What The Health (2017)

From the makers of Cowspiracy. This film sheds light on the impact of food on our health. But also shows that there are a lot more political and economic interests involved in providing dietary advice and promoting certain foods.

Okja (2017)

An animated movie but with a deeper message. You get a glimpse of the story behind the meat on your plate, but the animations make it a bit less gruesome than a documentary. Just available on Netflix!

www.nutritionfacts.org – Dr Michael Greger

Do you find scientific research interesting and important but don’t feel like scouring Pubmed yourself all the time? Dr. Greger and his team do it for you! They’re on top of the latest research being published about nutrition and make fun videos out of it so you don’t have to read anything. They critically examine general views about nutrition and not only dissect the link between red meat and cardiovascular disease, but also, for example, which foods give us the most antioxidants.
