Italy, Ibiza, America or Greece… Whatever your holiday destination is, it can sometimes be quite difficult to stick to your (new and healthy) diet when you’re on vacation. We give you tips!
It’s very understandable that you pay less attention to your food during a holiday. You eat out more often, they might not have the ingredients or dishes you’re used to from home, and you might treat yourself more frequently to an ice cream, dessert or other extra treats. That’s perfectly fine and should fit into your healthy lifestyle. But after a week of vacation, you don’t need to have gained 3 kilos. And who says you can’t eat healthy while on vacation?
- Summer isn’t complete without ice cream! Right? Opt for a sorbet instead of ice cream, and choose a cup instead of a cone. More and more often, there are multiple vegan options for ice cream, so be sure to ask!
- Skip the soft drinks and ask for water (possibly with carbonation) and a slice of lemon.
- Don’t drink alcohol every day, and when you do; have a glass instead of a whole bottle, drink slowly, and alternate your drinks with a glass of water. This saves you quite a few calories and you’ll feel much fresher the next morning.
- Every restaurant has vegetables. So if there’s nothing vegan on the menu, ask if they can make something for you or choose all the side dishes, which together make a fine meal!
- Ask in a restaurant if they can serve the dressing separately. In Spain or Italy, they often provide the oil alongside the salad. That helps, otherwise your healthy meal might turn into a heavy calorie bomb.
- Skip the fried potatoes and ask for the boiled or steamed version.
- Share your dessert, a few bites are usually enough to satisfy your sweet craving.
- Bring some basics with you from home. Ingredients to make oatmeal for breakfast are available in almost every country, but if you’re not sure, bring the ingredients from home!
